So where else could I possibly be on a wet May bank holiday weekend than here with 200 other delegates gathered in a London hotel waiting to hear Jakob Nielsen and his team tell us about the importance of web usability.
I was in good company - looking down the delegate list I could see that there was representation from international Government bodies, world banks, high street retailers and prestigious universities. In fact Tickbox Marketing was sandwiched on the delegate list between someone from House of Representatives of the Netherlands, and Roches Polska Sp zoo, from Poland.
So why were such prestigious and major organisations here and more importantly why was I there?
Well, Jakob Nielsen is a pioneer of the web. The US News and World Report calls him “the world’s leading expert of Web usability” and USA today “the next best thing to a true time machine”.
So was it worth sacrificing a bank holiday weekend? Wasn’t this stuff we could pick up on the web?
Well, to a certain extent Jakob was preaching to the converted, and taking 45 minutes on one slide to explain that the optimum number of users that should be included in a website usability study is 6/7 was pushing our powers of concentration – yes we believed you when you said it 45 minutes ago Jakob!
However this is more than just clever soundbites and opinions, this is the “why” not the “what!” and this why anyone who is anyone is here waiting to hear not only the theory but also the practice.
The Tickbox team are always working to ensure we are on the cutting edge of web thinking and we have to ensure we are getting the latest information and research especially when one of the forefathers of the web industry comes to town and gives it at first hand. It helps us assess how we work, to think of new ways of improving and looking to build better sites that exceed our client’s expectations and objectives.
