Hosting

If you want your website to be accessible via the World Wide Web, then it needs to be hosted.

Different websites have different hosting needs. For example a complex website requires a more comprehensive hosting packages, for instance your website may need to support a database and different applications development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, and ASP.NET).

If your website requires forms or content management then your hosting must allow for your programmer to write or install scripts. E-commerce websites require Secure Sockets Layer which allows for secure communications across the internet.

You could decide that you want to use a free web hosting service. Usually free hosting comes with advertisements attached e.g. your web pages will have adverts displayed, usually in the banner, that have nothing to do with your company.

Free web hosting packages are limited compared to paid hosting and sometimes mean you have to use a sub domain and your hosts primary domain name e.g. http://yourname.earthlink.com/ The disadvantage of this is that your web customers many find it hard to remember your website address and you are advertising not only your business but in this case Earthlink.com!

Shared web hosting service sees your website placed on the same web server as may other sites, ranging from a few hundreds to thousands. With shared web hosting your website will share a pool of server resources.

A Reseller web hosting package allows companies, such as web designers to become a host and lease web space on your behalf. Resellers then can add whatever functions your website requires - depending on what reseller package they have affiliated themselves with.

A Virtual Dedicated Server is a web server divided or sliced into many virtual servers, allowing a website owner to control and manage the virtual server as if it is their own dedicated web server. A Dedicated Server on the other hand is your own entire Web server with full controls and server management facility.

Other services your hosting company should give you:

The most important aspect of hosting is customer service. Bad customer service can lead to all sorts of problems for your business. For example when problems arise you need to know that your hosting company will solve them with minimal disruption to the continuity of your hosting service. For example downtime of the web server, where you website is hosted can cause your business both lost sales and a loss of credibility/reputation.
